Indian couturier Amit Aggarwal and Paris Haute Couture fame Rahul Mishra wowed the audience with their designs and hailed the growth of Indian fashion globally on Sunday (July 28) at the India couture week in New Delhi.

Aggarwal’s showcase featured futuristic designs with metallic fluted silhouettes made using his signature cording technique which shapes the fabric in holding interesting drapes and elements such as armour for a top and cocoon wrapping a model with unique headpieces.

“I feel that it is time for our creativity to attract the West to come to India and not the other way round,” said Aggarwal, who has presented his designs in private exhibitions at the Paris Fashion Week for almost a decade.

He added, the Indian economy is fast-growing and would soon become the hub for luxury retail, especially couture.

Rahul Mishra, the first Indian couturier to be invited to the Paris Haute Couture Week, presented a collection inspired by nature, with a lot of floral motifs and intricate embroidery, a signature for his label.

“Even for our stores which are in Delhi, we have got more than 25 to 30 per cent (of) people who are non-Indians or who are from other origins buying our pieces,” said Mishra, who is proud of the growing Indian representation abroad.

Mishra’s showstopper, Canadian actress and model Lisa Ray had the audience smitten, wearing an embellished off-white dress with a floral bustier, a saree-inspired drape and a long trail.

Ray hailed Mishra’s designs and reckoned, this is “the century of Indian couture.”

The weeklong fashion week being held in New Delhi from July 24 is set to conclude on Wednesday (July 31) and is one of the most prestigious ramps in the country for veteran and upcoming couturiers alike.
