Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), set to assume the role on December 1, 2024. This marks a significant milestone for Shah, who has been serving as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since October 2019 and as the Chairman of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021.

Shah’s election followed the decision of the current Chair, Greg Barclay, not to seek a third term, leaving Shah as the sole nominee for the position. In his new role, Shah is poised to steer the ICC at a crucial moment for cricket, particularly with the sport’s upcoming inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Expressing his gratitude upon election, Shah conveyed his dedication to expanding cricket’s global footprint. He outlined his vision of balancing multiple formats, adopting advanced technologies, and introducing marquee events to new markets worldwide. Shah emphasized the importance of fresh thinking and innovation in promoting the sport, particularly in light of cricket’s Olympic debut.

As the youngest person to lead the ICC, Shah joins a distinguished group of Indians who have previously held this position, including Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. His election is expected to usher in a new chapter for the ICC, as it continues to evolve and expand cricket’s reach on the global stage.
