Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, saying that India firmly believes no issue can be resolved on the battlefield.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw, PM Modi said that the loss of innocent lives in these crises is a challenge to humanity, urging dialogue and diplomacy as the only pathways to peace and stability.
“India is ready to offer its full support and cooperation, alongside our friendly nations, to restore peace,” Modi said.
PM Modi arrived in Poland on Wednesday as the first stop of his two-nation tour, with a visit to Ukraine planned next. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, now ongoing for nearly two and a half years, continues to be a source of global instability. PM Modi noted that Poland will assume the presidency of the European Union in January 2025 and expressed confidence that this role will further strengthen India-EU relations.
Modi acknowledged Poland’s rich tradition of Indology and Sanskrit, which has fostered a strong foundation for bilateral relations. He also pointed to the close cooperation in defence as a symbol of deep mutual trust between the two nations, emphasizing that innovation and youth talent are driving forces behind this partnership.
A Social Security Agreement has been finalized to support the skilled workforce and enhance mobility between the two countries. PM Modi also discussed the need for reforms within the United Nations and other international institutions to address global challenges effectively.
Addressing the shared concerns of terrorism and climate change, Modi emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts for a sustainable future, particularly in green energy initiatives. He also announced the elevation of India-Poland relations to the status of a strategic partnership as the two nations celebrate the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties.
PM Modi outlined several areas of potential collaboration, including urbanization, water treatment, solid waste management, and urban infrastructure, citing the rapid urban growth in India as an opportunity for joint efforts. Modi also invited Polish companies to participate in India’s “Make in India” and “Make for the World” initiatives, highlighting the country’s advancements in Fintech, Pharma, and Space.
PM Modi thanked PM Tusk and the people of Poland for their warm welcome and longstanding friendship. He specifically recognized Poland’s role in assisting with the evacuation of Indian students during the Ukraine conflict in 2022.
