Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on Friday to the freedom fighters of the Quit India Movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi. PM Modi highlighted the movement’s crucial role in India’s independence struggle, calling it a “watershed moment” in the country’s fight against British colonial rule.
In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his homage to those who participated under Gandhi’s leadership.
He also shared his thoughts through a video message on the occasion. In the video message, he said “Today, India is saying in one voice: Corruption Quit India. Dynasty Quit India. Appeasement Quit India,” he said in a video posted on X.
The Quit India Movement, or “Bharat Chodo Andolan,” was launched by Mahatma Gandhi on August 9, 1942, amid the Second World War, calling for an end to British rule in India, according to the Ministry of Culture.
The Ministry noted that the 1942 movement was pivotal in making the British realize the untenability of their continued governance in India and compelled them to consider their exit strategy.
The Quit India Movement, was marked by widespread non-violent protests advocating for an “orderly British withdrawal” from India. Gandhi’s speeches inspired the masses with his call for Indians to be their own guides in the struggle for freedom.
On August 9, 1942, Gandhi issued the famous “Do or Die” exhortation, urging all Indians to expel the British. The movement originated from Gawalia Tank in Mumbai. This day is annually commemorated as August Kranti Day.
