Road traffic and public order have basically returned to normal in Bangladesh, after decision was made that Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus will lead the new interim government starting Thursday.

The decision was taken after a long meeting with the chiefs of the three forces, army, navy and air force, and coordinators of the student movement at Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President, on Tuesday night.

Yunus is currently in Paris, the capital of France, for medical reasons. Reports suggest he will take over responsibility after returning on Thursday.

Meanwhile, members of the Bangladesh Army are maintaining security of public property and guarding important government facilities. The public has been asked to contact their nearest army bases in case of any potential sabotage activities, violence, or death threats.

After the now former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday due to the ongoing protests, there has been some anarchy and violence in Bangladesh. In response, the army has taken a cautious approach across the country.

The young students have launched a nationwide cleanliness campaign. Since Tuesday, they’ve cleaned roads and highways in various districts, including the capital Dhaka.

Offices, courts, public and private institutions are open again. But due to security reasons, universities remain closed. Roads in the capital have also returned to normal.
