Centre notifies appointment of Chief Justices for eight high courts

The Central Government, through the Ministry of Law and Justice, officially announced on Saturday the appointment of Chief Justices to eight High Courts, aiming to fill key judicial positions and ensure the effective functioning of the judicial system across various states.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who holds independent charge, shared the government’s decision on X. This significant development marks an important milestone in judicial appointments across India, impacting key legal institutions.

The Supreme Court Collegium initially made recommendations for these appointments on July 11, 2023. However, revisions were made to the original list on September 17, 2023, altering the recommendations concerning four High Courts.

According to the government notification, Justice Manmohan, currently the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the permanent Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji, a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been named the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, while Justice Rajiv Shakdher of the Delhi High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Justice Suresh Kait, also from the Delhi High Court, has been elevated to Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Other notable appointments include Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar of the Bombay High Court, who has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court, and Justice Tashi Rabstan, previously the Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, who will now serve as the permanent Chief Justice of the same court.

Additionally, Justice Shriram Kalpathi Rajendran from the Bombay High Court has been appointed Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, and Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, the current Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, has been transferred to serve as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
