Palesha Govardhan receives hero’s welcome in Kathmandu after Bronze medal win at Paris Paralympic

Palesha Govardhan returned to Kathmandu on Wednesday to a hero’s welcome after her remarkable performance in the Paris Paralympics. An appreciation rally was held in the Kathmandu Valley in her honor, celebrating her achievement. Palesha clinched a bronze medal in the under-57kg women’s category of taekwondo (K-44) after defeating her Serbian competitor.

Born with a disability in 2003 in Kathmandu, Palesha’s journey to becoming a top para-athlete is nothing short of inspiring. Currently a student of architecture in China, she debuted for Nepal’s national sports team in 2016. At just 13 years old, she participated in the World Para Taekwondo Championship, setting the foundation for her bright career. In 2021, she secured a gold medal at the Asian Youth Para Games, further establishing her prominence in para-sports.

Palesha’s bronze medal win in Paris has sparked widespread celebration in Nepal. Several organizations and offices have begun honoring her remarkable achievement. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli personally felicitated Palesha at an event at his residence, where he announced a cash prize of Rs 6.5 million for her outstanding performance. The Kathmandu metropolis also recognized her success, awarding her a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

Palesha’s victory has not only brought pride to Nepal but also served as an inspiration to many, showcasing the power of perseverance and dedication in overcoming obstacles.
