Bangladesh | Dhaka | Awami League | writ petition

In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a writ petition seeking restrictions on the political activities of 11 political parties, including the Bangladesh Awami League (AL), was submitted to the High Court on Monday.

The other ten parties mentioned in the petition are the Jatiya Party (Ershad), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Alternative Bangladesh, Tariqat Federation, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Liberal Democratic Party, Jatiya Party (Manju), Demokrati Dal, Marxist-Leninist (Barua), and the Socialist Party of Bangladesh.

The Law Secretary, Home Secretary, Election Commission, and the Inspector General of Police have been named as respondents in the writ.

This petition follows a previous application filed in August, which sought a complete ban on the Awami League. However, that petition was dismissed by a dual bench of the High Court on September 1.

Coordinators of the group Students Against Discrimination, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, filed the new petition. They have also submitted another writ challenging the legality of the 10th, 11th, and 13th parliamentary elections.

A hearing on the latest writ petition is expected to take place in the High Court later this week.

On October 23, the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus imposed a ban on the Awami League’s student wing, the Bangladesh Chhatra League, citing provisions of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
