India believes the Russia-Ukraine conflict should be resolved peacefully and New Delhi is ready to play any role to support peace and stability, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

“We have got another opportunity today to discuss these issues,” PM Modi said, speaking at the start of a bilateral meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia.

PM Modi underscored India’s commitment to an early resolution of the conflict.

“I have been in constant touch with you regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. As I have said before, we believe that the issues should be resolved peacefully. India fully supports the swift restoration of peace and stability, and all our efforts are guided by a humanitarian approach. We are ready to extend all possible cooperation in the future,” he said.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the strengthening of bilateral relations between India and Russia since the annual summit in Moscow in July.

“My two visits to Russia in the last three months reflect our close coordination and deep friendship. Our Annual Summit in Moscow this July further strengthened our cooperation across various sectors,” PM Modi said.

Highlighting the growing importance of BRICS, PM Modi said: “In its 15 years, BRICS has established a distinct identity, and many countries now seek to join. I am eager to participate in the BRICS Summit tomorrow.”

PM Modi said that the opening of a new Indian consulate in Kazan will enhance ties between India and the Russian city.

“I express my heartfelt gratitude for your friendship, warm welcome and hospitality. It is a matter of great pleasure for me to have the opportunity to visit a beautiful city like Kazan for the BRICS Summit. India has deep and historical ties with this city. The opening of India’s new consulate in Kazan will further strengthen these ties,” he said.
