A dream for every player: Kamboj reflects on 10-wicket Ranji haul

Anshul Kamboj of Haryana has etched his name into the history books by becoming only the third bowler in Ranji Trophy history to take all 10 wickets in an innings. This remarkable achievement places him among the elite few who have reached this milestone in India’s premier domestic cricket competition.

Expressing his delight, Kamboj said, “I am feeling very happy. It’s a big achievement in this prestigious tournament. It’s a dream for every player to do something like this so that everybody remembers it.”

Kamboj also reflected on the challenges of red-ball cricket compared to white-ball formats. “In red-ball cricket, you need more patience. In white-ball cricket, you tend to be a bit more defensive,” he explained.

The 23-year-old pacer from Haryana made history during their Round 5 Ranji Trophy clash against Kerala at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal Cricket Stadium.

Before Kamboj, Bengal’s Premangshu Chatterjee (10/20) and Rajasthan’s Pradeep Sunderam (10/78) had achieved this rare feat. Chatterjee was the first Indian to accomplish it with his record-breaking performance against Assam in January 1957, followed by Sunderam in November 1985 against Vidarbha.

Overall, Kamboj became the sixth Indian bowler to achieve this exclusive milestone, joining the ranks of legends like Anil Kumble, Subhash Gupte, and Debashish Mohanty. Kamboj finished with figures of 10/49 in 30.1 overs, restricting Kerala to 291 on Day 3. This marked the first ten-wicket haul of his first-class career.

In total, the youngster has 57 wickets in 19 first-class matches at an average of 24.14. Besides his bowling prowess, Kamboj has also contributed with the bat, scoring 358 runs in his first-class career.

Kamboj’s rapid rise in domestic cricket has been impressive. He recently featured for India A in the Men’s Emerging Asia Cup, claiming four wickets in three matches. He delivered a Player of the Match performance against Pakistan Shaheens with figures of 3/33.

In the Duleep Trophy 2024-25, Kamboj was a standout performer for India C, taking 16 wickets and finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.

In IPL 2024, Kamboj debuted for the Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions, picking up two wickets in three games. His stellar form continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he was instrumental in Haryana’s 2023-24 title-winning campaign, taking 17 wickets in 10 matches.
