Rajnath Singh | Debate on Constitution | 75th anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution

‘Attempts to portray Constitution as gift of particular party”: Rajnath Singh attacks Congress during debate on Constitution

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday initiated a debate in the Lok Sabha to mark the 75th anniversary of the adoption of India’s Constitution. In his address, Singh highlighted the Constitution’s historical significance, emphasizing its role in shaping India’s governance and its position on the global stage.

Singh began by reflecting on the extensive deliberations that led to the formation of the Constitution, underlining its deep connection to India’s civilizational values. He also expressed concerns over recent efforts to politicize the Constitution’s legacy, specifically targeting the Congress party. The Defence Minister criticized attempts to attribute the creation of the Constitution to a single political entity, stressing that the document was the product of collective efforts by a diverse group of individuals from across the country.

“There has always been an attempt by a particular party to hijack the work of Constitution making… Today, I want to make it clear, our Constitution is not the gift of a single party. The Constitution of India was made by the people of India, in accordance with the values of India,” Singh said. He further emphasized that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working in line with the spirit of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas,” ensuring that the country’s progress remains inclusive and in alignment with the values embedded in the Constitution.

Singh’s remarks sought to counter the narrative that the Constitution was shaped by a single political ideology, stressing that it was a reflection of India’s broad cultural and civilizational heritage. He called for a more inclusive and accurate understanding of the Constitution’s creation, one that recognizes the contributions of all individuals, regardless of political affiliations.

The Defence Minister also highlighted the Constitution’s importance beyond its legal framework, noting that it was a representation of the collective aspirations of the Indian people and their commitment to building a democratic society. “The Constitution, prepared by the Constituent Assembly, was the result of almost three years of rigorous debate and deliberation. It was not merely a legal document, but a reflection of the people’s will and their desires for a democratic India,” Singh said.

He also marked the historical significance of November 26, 1949, when India transitioned from being subjects under British rule to citizens of a free republic. This day, he noted, symbolizes the dedication of India to its Constitution, which bestowed fundamental rights and the honor of citizenship upon its people.

Further emphasizing the document’s importance, Singh described the Constitution as not just a governance tool, but as a “roadmap” to restore India’s glory on the world stage. “It is not just a tool for governance, but a roadmap to give India its rightful place on the world stage,” he stated.

Singh concluded by asserting that India’s Constitution is a testament to the nation’s enduring ideals of democracy, equality, and justice, deeply rooted in the cultural and civilizational values of India. “Our Constitution is an expression of our cultural heritage and values, and we must respect its collective significance,” he added.

The debate marks the beginning of a special discussion on the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, with several leaders expected to contribute to the proceedings.

Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have issued a ‘three-line whip’ to ensure the attendance of their respective members during the discussions. The current winter session of Parliament, which began on November 25, will continue until December 20.
