Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday in New Delhi, continuing his official two-day visit to India.
The two leaders greeted each other with a warm handshake before sitting down for discussions. The meeting is expected to further strengthen the enduring ties between the two nations.
Earlier in the day, King Wangchuck, accompanied by Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, arrived in New Delhi, where they were warmly welcomed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Jaishankar expressed that the visit would deepen the “unique bonds of friendship” shared by India and Bhutan, writing on X, “Honoured to welcome His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, on his arrival in New Delhi today. His visit will further strengthen our unique bonds of friendship.”
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during his visit, the Bhutanese King will meet with senior Indian government officials, including Prime Minister Modi, to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues. MEA highlighted the visit as an opportunity to review and expand cooperation between the two countries across various sectors.
On December 2, Bhutan’s Minister of Industry, Commerce, and Employment, Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, emphasized India’s pivotal role in Bhutan’s growth. He described India as both a pillar of support and an inspiration for Bhutan, citing the trust and shared values that fuel their collaboration. Speaking at the 29th Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit in Delhi, Dorji said, “India’s role as Bhutan’s closest partner is not only a pillar of support but also an inspiration. The trust, collaboration, and shared values between our two countries make India an enabler of Bhutan’s aspirations.”
