The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has estimated that at least 3,70,000 people, including men, women, and children, have been displaced due to the escalation of hostilities in Syria. This figure includes 1,00,000 individuals who have been forced to leave their homes multiple times.
In his daily press briefing, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that most of the displaced individuals are women and children. “Tens of thousands of people have now arrived in northeast Syria,” he added.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and NGOs operating in the region estimate that between 60,000 and 80,000 people have been newly displaced, with more than 25,000 currently sheltered in temporary accommodations. These shelters are filling up quickly, and with many sites already at capacity, people are left sleeping on the streets or in their cars as sub-zero temperatures set in.
The UN is working with humanitarian partners in the northeast to assess the needs of families arriving at reception centers.
