India’s digital transformation: strengthening infrastructure and governance

India has emerged as a global leader in digital adoption, with significant advancements in cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and digital governance. These developments have strengthened the country’s digital economy, enhancing the accessibility, scalability, and security of services for both government operations and private sector growth.

Expanding digital infrastructure

A critical pillar of India’s digital transformation is its expanding data centre ecosystem. These facilities support the growing demand for cloud services, data storage, and AI/ML applications. India’s data centre industry, with an IT load capacity of approximately 1,000 MW, is on a growth trajectory. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) operates multiple National Data Centres (NDCs) in cities like Delhi, Pune, Bhubaneswar, and Hyderabad, offering cloud services, disaster recovery, and hosting solutions for government functions. A new NDC in Guwahati, Assam, is under development to address regional challenges and promote socio-economic growth.

Advancing cloud services and e-governance

The NIC’s MeghRaj initiative, launched in 2022, has significantly enhanced India’s cloud infrastructure, serving over 300 government departments and enabling efficient e-Governance services. MeghRaj supports applications such as digital payments and identity verification, while the GI Cloud project empowers state and Union Territory (UT) departments to adopt cloud solutions, driving further progress in digital public infrastructure.

Strengthening digital public infrastructure

India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has revolutionized service delivery. Aadhaar, the world’s largest digital identity system, has issued over 138 crore unique IDs. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed financial transactions, processing over 24,100 crore transactions by June 2024. Platforms like DigiLocker, DIKSHA, and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) further reinforce the country’s digital transformation, enabling seamless access to critical services.

Revolutionising health and education

India’s digital advances extend into healthcare and education. Initiatives like eSanjeevani (telemedicine), e-Hospital (hospital management), and e-Courts have improved healthcare and justice delivery. DigiLocker has simplified digital document verification for over 37 crore users. In education, the DIKSHA platform, supporting 556 crore learning sessions, stands as the largest global education initiative.

Improving rural connectivity

The Common Services Centres (CSCs) initiative has brought digital services to rural areas, with over 5.84 lakh operational CSCs as of October 2024. These centres offer access to government schemes, education, and telemedicine, bridging the urban-rural divide in digital accessibility.

Citizen-centric platforms

User-friendly platforms like UMANG and MeriPehchaan have streamlined access to government services. UMANG integrates services across various sectors and has a user base of over 7.12 crore. Similarly, MeriPehchaan enables single authentication for accessing government services. Initiatives such as e-Sign, API Setu, and MyGov promote seamless service delivery and citizen engagement.

Streamlining government operations

The government is making strides toward paperless governance. DigiLocker, with over 37 crore users, has transformed document issuance and verification. Tools like CollabFiles and GovDrive support secure document management for government officials, while the Gov Intranet Platform enhances workflow and communication, improving efficiency.
