Over 40 schools in Delhi on Monday received a bomb threat via email demanding a ransom of $30,000.
The message forced schools to quickly evacuate students and staff, with parents being asked to take the students home for the day.
Two schools got the threatening email on Sunday night, while many other schools received the emails on Monday morning.
Speaking to ANI, Delhi Police PRO Sanjay Tyagi said that the police are trying to find the source of the email.
“Immediately after receiving the email, the police swung into action. Police teams have reached all schools that received the threat,” Tyagi said.
“I would like to assure the parents and the people of Delhi that the police will make every effort to ensure the security of the children and the school,” Tyagi added.
Airlines and airports in India received 999 hoax bomb threats from the start of the year until mid-November, and 12 people had been arrested during the same period, government data shows.
Last month, the Delhi High Court directed the government to formulate a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling bomb threats.
