Unseeded Portuguese Nuno Borges knocked out Australian 27th seed Jordan Thompson 6-3 6-2 6-4 at John Cain Arena and has earned a third-round match against third seed Carlos Alcaraz.
0406 OSAKA FIGHTS BACK TO BEAT MUCHOVA
Twice champion Naomi Osaka was blown away by Karolina Muchova in the opening set but produced a stirring comeback to win 1-6 6-1 6-3 and move into the third round.
“It took everything, I left everything out there on the court,” said Osaka, who lost to Muchova in their last two meetings.
0405 MACHAC BATTLES PAST OPELKA
Tomas Machac beat big-serving Reilly Opelka 3-6 7-6(1) 6-7(5) 7-6(4) 6-4 in a five-set match where both players converted only one break point each.
Opelka sent down 40 aces and 83 winners but the American also made 89 unforced errors and 16 double faults.
0336 ALCARAZ CRUISES INTO THIRD ROUND
Third seed Carlos Alcaraz brushed aside Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0 6-1 6-4 in 81 minutes to march into the third round. Alcaraz got off to a blistering start and never looked back, winning the first nine games before Nishioka could even get on the board.

Novak Djokovic has now played 430 singles matches at Grand Slams as the 37-year-old Serbian broke the record set by Roger Federer.

Russian 14th seed Mirra Andreeva saved a match point in the final set tiebreak to beat Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima 6-4 3-6 7-6(8) and reach the third round.
Andreeva, 17, is looking to improve on her last-16 run on her Melbourne Park debut last year.
0230 SIEGEMUND UPSETS OLYMPIC CHAMPION ZHENG
Germany’s world number 97 Laura Siegemund knocked out Olympic champion and fifth seed Zheng Qinwen 7-6(3) 6-3 at the John Cain Arena. The 36-year-old sank to her knees after the win as Zheng became the first major casualty in the women’s draw.
“I knew I had to play more than my best tennis with nothing to lose, so I told myself to swing free… I know I can play well and I wanted to show that,” Siegemund said.
0218 SABALENKA ADVANCES WITH SECOND-SET COMEBACK
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-3 7-5 to reach the third round but the defending champion had to make a comeback from 5-2 down in the second set.
Bouzas Maneiro saved two match points but could not prevent the Belarusian from moving on.
0205 PEGULA MOVES INTO THIRD ROUND
American seventh seed Jessica Pegula beat Elise Mertens 6-4 6-2 to advance to the third round in just 71 minutes at Margaret Court Arena.
Earlier, Olga Danilovic became the first player to reach the third round after she upset 25th seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-1 6-2.
0016 PLAY BEGINS AFTER MORNING SHOWERS
Play began at John Cain Arena with Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen taking on Laura Siegemund, as rain in the morning delayed proceedings on the other courts.
The temperature was 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 F) on the fourth day of the championships with more showers predicted.
Aryna Sabalenka continues her title defence with a second-round clash against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, while Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka are in action later in the day.
