Ministry of Education’s 2024 achievements: 3,656 schools upgraded, 13,882 smart schools, and 35,457 girls’ toilets built

The Ministry of Education has made significant strides in 2024, upgrading 3,656 schools, establishing 13,882 smart schools, and constructing 35,457 girls’ toilets across the country. These accomplishments, part of flagship initiatives like Samagra Shiksha, PM SHRI, and PM POSHAN, reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing education quality, inclusivity, and infrastructure nationwide, as stated in a press release issued by the Ministry on Thursday.

Samagra Shiksha: Comprehensive Support for Education

The Samagra Shiksha scheme continues to provide comprehensive support for the universalization of education from pre-primary to class XII. Since 2018, the scheme has led to the upgradation of 3,656 schools and the construction of 80,105 classrooms, ensuring better learning environments. Over 13,882 schools have also been equipped with Information and Communication Technology (ICT), creating smart classrooms that integrate digital learning. Additionally, more than 35,457 girls’ toilets have been constructed, promoting sanitation and hygiene in schools.

PM SHRI Schools: Leading the Way in NEP 2020 Implementation

Under the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) initiative, 12,084 schools have been selected to act as model institutions, showcasing best practices in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. These schools are designed to offer leadership to nearby schools, promoting high-quality education across the country. Facilities such as smart classrooms, Atal Tinkering Labs, science labs, and inclusive sports infrastructure have been introduced, aiming to create an exemplar learning environment.

PM POSHAN: Ensuring Nutrition for Education

The Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) scheme, which provides hot cooked meals to children from classes I to VIII, has played a crucial role in combating hunger while promoting education. In 2024, the scheme covered millions of children, including those in pre-school (Bal Vatika), improving attendance and focus in schools. The initiative, previously known as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, continues to support the educational journey of disadvantaged students across the nation.

ULLAS: Lifelong Learning for Over 88 Lakh Literates

ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram, launched to promote literacy among adults aged 15 and above, has registered over 2 crore learners and 39 lakh volunteer teachers since 2023. As of 2024, more than 88 lakh learners have been declared certified literates. The program is helping bridge the literacy gap, with Ladakh becoming the first administrative unit to achieve 100% literacy under this scheme.

Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE: empowering students as environmental leaders

Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE, part of the Ministry’s environmental education efforts, have played a critical role in raising awareness about sustainability and environmental conservation.

In 2024, over 11 crore students, teachers, and community members participated in activities such as tree plantations, seed ball preparation, and waste reduction drives, aligning with the Ministry’s goal of nurturing environmentally conscious citizens.

With these landmark achievements, the Ministry of Education continues to lay a strong foundation for the future, ensuring that students across India have access to quality education, inclusive learning environments, and opportunities for holistic development.
