Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, presenting the Union Budget 2025, highlighted the government’s vision for the next five years as a transformative period to realize “Sabka Vikas” and foster balanced regional growth.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Sitharaman emphasized India’s robust economic progress and global recognition over the past decade. “Our economy is the fastest growing among all major economies. Structural reforms and our development track record over the last 10 years have drawn global attention. Confidence in India’s capability and potential has only grown during this period,” she said.
The Finance Minister outlined 10 key areas of focus in the budget, aimed at benefitting the poor, youth, farmers, and women.
Among the significant announcements was the launch of a Nuclear Energy Mission to support India’s clean energy transition and the goal of achieving a “Viksit Bharat”. This mission aims to develop 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047.
To encourage private sector participation, amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act will be introduced. Additionally, Sitharaman announced a ₹20,000 crore research and development initiative for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with at least five indigenously developed reactors expected to be operational by 2033.
“The development of 100 GW of nuclear energy by 2047 is essential for our energy transition. Active partnerships with the private sector will be facilitated through amendments to relevant laws,” she added.
