Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday praised the BJP government, stating that its most significant achievement has been reducing the distance between the Northeast and the rest of India.
Addressing the North-East Students’ and Youth Parliament organized by ABVP in New Delhi, Shah said, “The biggest achievement of the BJP government is that it has reduced the distance between the Northeast and the rest of India. By 2027, every capital of the Northeast will be connected by train, plane, and road.”
The Union Home Minister also highlighted a significant reduction in violence across the region under the BJP’s tenure. He added that violent incidents decreased by 70% — from 11,000 cases between 2004 and 2014 to 3,428 between 2014 and 2024. Security force fatalities also dropped by 70%, while civilian deaths reduced by 89% over the past decade.
Shah credited these improvements to peace agreements, saying that the government has signed 12 major accords with various armed groups in the Northeast over the last 10 years. “Our Northeast is experiencing peace today. Be it Meghalaya, Arunachal, Assam, Nagaland, or Mizoram, we have signed agreements with all armed groups, and more than 10,500 insurgents have laid down their arms and joined the mainstream,” Shah said.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a huge budget for the development of the Northeast. In ten years, considering the Northeast as his own, the Prime Minister has taken care of its development so much that he has decided that every month, one minister will stay overnight in some state of the Northeast,” said Shah.
The Home Minister commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, praising his dedicated focus on the Northeast’s development and peace. Shah emphasized that stability is essential for progress, and PM Modi has prioritized this region with consistent efforts.
Shah highlighted that PM Modi has made 78 visits to the Northeast (excluding Assam) since taking office, compared to a combined total of 21 visits by all previous Prime Ministers since India’s independence. This, he said, reflected the government’s strong commitment to the region.
Shah also announced a major development initiative for the Northeast, revealing plans for a semiconductor plant worth Rs 2,700 crore in Assam and an overall investment of Rs 2.5 lakh crore in the region. He assured the youth that within the next decade, employment opportunities would be abundant, reducing the need for people to migrate for work.
“Today, a semiconductor plant worth Rs 2,700 crore is coming up in Assam, which will be useful for you. Not only this, an investment of Rs 2.5 lakh crore is coming. The foundation has been laid in these 10 years. Within 10 years, not a single child or youth from the Northeast will have to leave for work. You will get employment in the Northeast itself,” Shah said.
