“When you come here, you enrich our country as well”: Mauritius PM Ramgoolam hails PM Modi’s visit

Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius, acknowledging India’s significant contributions to the country’s development across various sectors. He expressed gratitude for India’s continued support and the recent extension of OCI cards to Mauritian citizens.

Speaking at an Indian community event, PM Ramgoolam lauded PM Modi’s visit as a special gesture. “It is very rare for politicians like us to be at a loss for words. I am bereft of words because I am so touched by Prime Minister Modi’s gesture,” he said.

He further thanked PM Modi for taking time from his schedule to participate as the Chief Guest at Mauritius’ 57th Independence Day celebrations. “When you come here, you enrich our country as well,” PM Ramgoolam said, adding that India’s contributions to Mauritius across various industries are deeply valued.

Highlighting the key areas where India has actively collaborated with Mauritius, Ramgoolam mentioned the construction industry, tourism, medical sector, hospitality, and financial services, all of which play a crucial role in driving Mauritius’ economic growth.

He also spoke about the historical and cultural ties between the two nations, recalling how indentured laborers arrived in Mauritius with little but their faith, carrying the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana, along with memories of their homeland. “This is why they were intrinsically bound by unshakeable ties to the motherland,” he said.

PM Ramgoolam expressed appreciation for India’s decision to extend OCI cards to the seventh generation of Mauritians of Indian descent, calling it a significant step in strengthening the relationship between the two nations.

Encouraging Indian investors to explore opportunities in Mauritius, PM Ramgoolam highlighted the country’s investment initiative titled “Bridge to the Future,” designed to attract investments and facilitate business operations in Mauritius.

Concluding his speech, he said, “Jai Hind, Jai Mauritius.”
