Parts of India are bracing for a week of significant monsoon activity, with extremely heavy rainfall forecast for eastern Rajasthan and western Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. The India Meteorological Department said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over eastern Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh through August 1, with isolated extreme downpours expected in these regions on July 30.
Northeast India is also set to experience persistent wet conditions, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to continue over the region for the next seven days. The forecast includes very heavy rainfall for Arunachal Pradesh from August 1-5, and for Assam and Meghalaya from July 31-August 5.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim can expect similar conditions from August 2-4, while Bihar will likely see heavy rains on August 3 and 4. Other areas with very heavy rainfall warnings on July 30 include Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal, with western Rajasthan also on alert for both July 30 and 31. Conversely, rainfall activities are expected to be subdued over South Peninsular India for the next six to seven days and over central India starting from August 1.
The forecast follows a period of intense rain, with extremely heavy falls (21 cm or more) recorded in isolated places over eastern Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in the past 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) was also recorded in isolated areas of Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, western Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall (7-11 cm) occurred in isolated places across eastern Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Madhya Maharashtra, and south interior Karnataka.
In the Delhi-NCR region, the forecast indicates a mix of rain and clouds over the coming days.
On Wednesday, the sky is expected to be generally cloudy with one or two spells of light rain and a possibility of moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning during the evening or night. Maximum temperatures are predicted to be between 30 to 32°C, which is 2 to 4°C below normal. The predominant surface wind will be from the southeast at 10-15 kmph in the afternoon and evening.
For July 31, Delhi is likely to experience generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Temperatures will be in the range of 30 to 32°C for the maximum and 23 to 25°C for the minimum, both of which are below normal. Wind speed will be from the southeast, starting at 8-10 kmph in the morning and increasing to 10-15 kmph in the afternoon and evening.
Looking ahead to August 1 and 2, the sky will be partly cloudy with very light to light rain and thunderstorms. On August 1, temperatures are expected to be 33 to 35°C for the maximum and 23 to 25°C for the minimum, with the maximum temperature returning to near normal. Winds will be from the east, with speeds less than 10-15 kmph, decreasing later in the evening. The weather on August 2 will be similar, with temperatures remaining in the 33 to 35°C and 23 to 25°C range, and a consistent southeast wind at 8-10 kmph.
