India Post full digitization

India Post nears full digitization as over 86,000 post offices go digital; full network migration by August 4

In a sweeping digital overhaul of one of the world’s largest postal networks, over 86,000 post offices across India have been digitized under India Post’s IT 2.0 transformation initiative. The remaining post offices—taking the total to approximately 1.65 lakh—are set to be fully digitized by August 4, marking a historic milestone in the Department of Posts’ journey toward becoming India’s leading public logistics and digital commerce enabler.

This digitization drive was reviewed on Tuesday by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Union Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, who chaired a high-level strategy meeting covering Mail Operations, Parcel Operations, and Business Strategy divisions of India Post.

“This is not just a modernisation exercise,” said Dr. Pemmasani. “It’s a complete reinvention of how India Post serves the people. With its unmatched physical reach, India Post must now deliver with the scale, speed, and service quality that today’s digital economy demands—from the remotest corners of India to its busiest metros.”

The digitization under IT 2.0 includes real-time tracking and tracing, electronic proof of delivery, OTP-based authentication, digital payments, and integration with open APIs for external systems. These capabilities are designed to match, and even exceed, private-sector logistics benchmarks, especially in the fast-growing e-commerce sector.

As part of its transformation roadmap, India Post has also operationalized 344 new centralized Delivery Centres across the country in the first phase. These centers consolidate service areas of multiple post offices and are now offering morning, evening, Sunday, and holiday deliveries, bringing flexibility and efficiency to India Post’s logistics network.

One of the cornerstones of India Post 2.0 is its strategic integration with national digital commerce platforms. Through the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), India Post will now facilitate prepaid bookings, automated accounting, and centralized order tracking. Similarly, collaboration with the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) will allow seamless API-based pricing, centralized payment dashboards, and real-time cash-on-delivery settlements.

India Post has also introduced a dedicated data analytics team working within the IT 2.0 ecosystem. Their mandate includes route optimization, demand forecasting, smart sorting, and enhancing operational efficiency. Officials say these analytics-driven insights will be key in boosting revenues and sharpening India Post’s competitiveness in the logistics space.

“With reforms accelerating and digital transformation nearing completion, India Post is ready to serve as the foundation of India’s public logistics infrastructure,” said Dr. Pemmasani. “It will empower small businesses, enable rural e-commerce, and ensure inclusive service delivery in the true spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.”
