Millions benefitted, focus will remain on youth: PM Modi on 10 years of Skill India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a skilled and self-reliant workforce as the Skill India Mission completed ten years.

Calling the mission a “transformative initiative”, PM Modi said it has empowered millions of young people across the country with new skills and opportunities.

In reply to a post on social media platform X by MyGovIndia and Union Minister Jayant Singh, the Prime Minister said, “Skill India is strengthening the resolve to make our youth skilled and self-reliant.”

“The Skill India initiative has benefited countless people, empowering them with new skills and creating opportunities. In the coming times as well, we will keep focusing on equipping our Yuva Shakti with new skills, in line with global best practices, so that we can realise our dream of a Viksit Bharat,” the PM added.

Launched in 2015, the Skill India Mission aims to train millions in industry-relevant skills to enhance employability and promote entrepreneurship. Since 2014, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has empowered over six crore Indians through various schemes.

Under the flagship Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) alone, more than 1.6 crore youth have been trained nationwide since its inception. The programme has continued to evolve with time, expanding its courses to emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

As of July 11, 2025, over 25 lakh candidates have been trained under PMKVY 4.0, reflecting the government’s continued efforts to align skill development with global standards and future-ready industries.

The government has reiterated that it will keep expanding skilling programmes to ensure India’s youth contribute meaningfully to building a developed nation.
