The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started proceedings to delist 476 Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs) that have failed to contest any elections for six consecutive years, as part of its ongoing efforts to streamline the electoral process.
The move follows a similar exercise conducted recently, when the ECI delisted 334 inactive RUPPs on August 9, 2025, reducing the total number of listed RUPPs from 2,854 to 2,520. This second phase targets parties from various states and union territories across the country.
Under Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, political parties registered with the ECI enjoy privileges such as election symbols and tax exemptions. However, guidelines clearly state that parties failing to participate in elections continuously for six years are liable to be removed from the register.
The ECI has instructed the Chief Electoral Officers (CEOs) of the respective states and union territories to issue show-cause notices to the identified RUPPs, allowing them an opportunity to respond before a final decision is taken.
“The Election Commission’s goal is to uphold the integrity of the electoral system by removing dormant parties that may misuse privileges meant for active participants. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the electoral process,” the ECI said.
