A powerful orator, a dedicated leader: Tributes pour in for Sushma Swaraj on her sixth death anniversary

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with several other senior leaders, paid tributes to former Union Minister Sushma Swaraj on her sixth death anniversary on Wednesday.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Shah said, “Sushma Swaraj Ji’s entire life was dedicated to public welfare and national service. From organisation to government, she fulfilled every responsibility with complete dedication. As Foreign Minister, she consistently helped Indians living abroad. She will always remain etched in our memories through her work.”

Swaraj, known for her powerful oratory and prompt humanitarian response as External Affairs Minister, passed away on August 6, 2019, following a cardiac arrest.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, also posting on X, wrote in Hindi, “Humble tributes on the remembrance day of senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Padma Vibhushan Sushma Swaraj Ji.”

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju called her a role model. “A powerful orator, a sharp leader, and dedicated to public service… Her contribution to national service is unforgettable. Her simple life and strong leadership will remain a source of inspiration for future generations,” he posted on X.

Bansuri Swaraj, BJP MP and daughter of the late leader, shared an emotional note on X, recalling her mother’s absence over the past six years. “Yet even today, my eyes instinctively search for you… you still echo in every heartbeat,” she wrote in Hindi. “My path is still illuminated by your blessings.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described Swaraj as a “vibrant symbol of women’s strength”. He said, “With the spirit of nation first, she served the country and its people throughout her life. Her ideal life, full of simplicity and purity, is an inspiration.”

Swaraj served as External Affairs Minister in the first term of the Modi government and was the second woman to hold the post after Indira Gandhi. A seven-time MP, she also briefly served as Chief Minister of Delhi in 1998 and represented India on several international platforms.
