The government on Tuesday announced that Ayurveda Day will henceforth be observed on September 23 every year, marking a shift from the earlier practice of celebrating it on Dhanvantari Jayanti. The decision, notified in March 2025, gives Ayurveda a fixed date on the global calendar for the first time since the annual event was launched in 2016.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav said the theme for Ayurveda Day 2025 would be “Ayurveda for People & Planet.” He underlined that Ayurveda was not merely a healthcare system but a life science “rooted in the principle of harmony between the individual and the environment.”
“By designating September 23 as Ayurveda Day, India has given Ayurveda a global calendar identity. The 2025 theme reflects our collective resolve to harness the full potential of Ayurveda for global wellbeing and a healthier planet,” Jadhav said.
Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said the observance, since its inception, had grown into a global movement. He cited the first all-India NSSO survey which showed Ayurveda as the most widely used system of treatment across both rural and urban India. “The 2025 theme underlines our commitment towards advancing holistic health and ecological balance,” he said.
The ninth Ayurveda Day in 2024 was a landmark, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase II of the All India Institute of Ayurveda in Delhi, launched four Centres of Excellence, and rolled out the nationwide “Desh Ka Prakriti Parikshan Abhiyan” campaign along with health-related initiatives worth about ₹12,850 crore.
Building on that momentum, officials said Ayurveda Day 2025 would be positioned as more than just a ceremonial event. The day will focus on contemporary global challenges such as lifestyle disorders, climate-linked diseases and stress management.
The Ministry of Ayush said activities will include awareness campaigns, youth engagement programmes, wellness consultations and international collaborations. In 2024, programmes were held in about 150 countries, underscoring Ayurveda’s growing global footprint.
