India’s defence production hits record ₹1,50,590 crore, private sector share rises

India’s annual defence production has reached an all-time high of ₹1,50,590 crore in the financial year 2024-25, marking a jump of over 18% from last year’s ₹1.27 lakh crore and a massive 90% rise since FY 2019-20, when the figure stood at ₹79,071 crore.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the achievement as a clear reflection of the nation’s strengthening defence industrial base, crediting the Department of Defence Production, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), public sector manufacturers, and private industry for their collective efforts.

DPSUs and other public sector units contributed around 77% of the total output, while the private sector accounted for 23%, up from 21% in the previous fiscal — signalling a growing role for private players in the defence ecosystem. In FY 2024-25, production by DPSUs grew 16%, while the private sector saw a sharper 28% rise.

The consistent year-on-year growth is linked to major policy reforms, a focus on ease of doing business, and sustained efforts toward indigenisation over the past decade. The momentum aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aimed at reducing import dependence and boosting self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

Defence exports also touched a record ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024-25 — up 12.04% from the previous year’s ₹21,083 crore.

With continued policy support, increasing private participation, and expanding export capabilities, the sector’s growth trajectory is expected to remain strong in the years ahead.
