Delhi CM Rekha Gupta allegedly attacked during ‘Jan Sunvai’, Police apprehend one person

The Delhi Police on Wednesday apprehended a man for allegedly attacking Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing (Jan Sunvai) at her Civil Lines residence.

“One person has been apprehended and taken to Civil Lines Police Station in connection with the attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta during Jan Sunvai,” the police said in a statement.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed the incident, stating that the accused was immediately nabbed by the police and is currently being questioned.

According to eyewitnesses, the man approached the CM while presenting some papers and allegedly held her hand, attempting to pull her towards him. “During this, there was some jostling… People caught him. All details are being investigated by the police. The CM is stable and has been examined by doctors,” Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva told reporters. He dismissed reports of stone-pelting or slapping as “fabricated,” adding that Jan Sunvai sessions would continue.

Sachdeva strongly condemned the incident, calling it “unfortunate and condemnable.”

Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa alleged a political conspiracy behind the attack, claiming rivals could not tolerate the CM’s direct engagement with the public. “This is a conspiracy by rivals. Police are investigating, and all facts will come out,” Sirsa said in a video message.

Another minister, Kapil Mishra, termed the attack a “cowardly act,” asserting that the government would not “bow or stop” in its commitment to Delhi’s development.

Leaders across parties also condemned the incident.

Delhi LoP Atishi said, “In a democracy, there is space for disagreement but not for violence. We hope Delhi Police takes the strictest action.” Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav called the incident “very unfortunate,” adding, “If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can common citizens be safe?”

The Delhi Police inquiry into the matter is underway.
