Domestic auto sales mixed in July 2025; two- and three-wheelers see growth

India’s domestic automobile industry recorded a mixed performance in July 2025, with passenger vehicle sales dipping slightly while two- and three-wheelers showed notable growth, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Passenger vehicle sales stood at 3,40,772 units in July 2025, marginally down 0.2 per cent from 3,41,510 units in the same month last year. The subdued performance in this segment contrasted with the three-wheeler category, which achieved its highest-ever July sales at 69,403 units, marking a 17.5 per cent increase from 59,073 units in July 2024.

Within the three-wheeler segment, passenger carriers rose 21.4 per cent, goods carriers increased 10.6 per cent, while E-rickshaws declined sharply by 53.3 per cent. On the other hand, E-carts surged by an impressive 161.6 per cent.

The two-wheeler segment also demonstrated growth, with sales reaching 15,67,267 units in July 2025, up 8.7 per cent from 14,41,694 units in July 2024. Scooter sales jumped 16.2 per cent to 6,43,169 units, while motorcycle sales rose 4.7 per cent to 8,90,107 units. Mopeds, however, experienced a decline of 9.5 per cent, with sales falling to 33,991 units from 37,563 units last year.

Commenting on the monthly performance, Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, said, “All vehicle segments posted stable performance in July 2025, though overall sentiment in the passenger vehicle segment has remained subdued, registering a marginal 0.2 per cent decline. With the advent of the festive season, beginning with Onam festivities later in August, the Indian auto industry remains cautiously optimistic that demand momentum will pick up in the coming months.”

The quadricycle segment, which recorded 19 units in July 2024, reported no sales this year.
