DRDO successfully tests Indigenous Integrated Air Defence Weapon System off Odisha coast

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a significant milestone with the successful maiden flight-tests of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the Odisha coast on August 23, 2025, at approximately 12:30 PM. This fully indigenous, multi-layered air defence system demonstrated its capability to counter aerial threats, marking a major step forward in bolstering India’s defence infrastructure.

The IADWS integrates three advanced components: Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QRSAM), Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles, and a high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW). The system’s operations are seamlessly managed by a Centralised Command and Control Centre, developed by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory, which serves as the nodal laboratory for the programme. The VSHORADS and DEW were developed by the Research Centre Imarat and the Centre for High Energy Systems and Sciences, respectively.

During the tests, the IADWS effectively engaged and destroyed three distinct targets simultaneously, including two high-speed fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and a multi-copter drone, at varying ranges and altitudes. The QRSAM, VSHORADS, and high-energy laser weapon system performed flawlessly, neutralising the targets with precision. The operation was supported by advanced radars, communication systems, and a drone detection and destruction mechanism, all of which functioned seamlessly. The Integrated Test Range at Chandipur deployed range instruments to capture flight data, confirming the system’s impeccable performance. Senior DRDO scientists and representatives from the Armed Forces witnessed the successful trials.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the DRDO, the Armed Forces, and industry partners for their collaborative efforts in developing the IADWS. He highlighted that the successful flight-tests have established India’s robust multi-layered air defence capability, significantly enhancing the protection of critical infrastructure against enemy aerial threats. The achievement underscores India’s growing self-reliance in advanced defence technologies.

DRDO Chairman and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, Dr. Samir V. Kamat, congratulated the teams involved, commending their dedication and expertise in delivering this cutting-edge system.
