The city of Dubai has transformed its iconic shopping destinations into fitness tracks for an innovative month-long initiative called the Dubai Mallathon, capturing the imagination of residents and visitors alike. Now in full swing, the fitness programme turns some of the city’s most famous shopping centres into early-morning fitness arenas from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. throughout August. Launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, it offers a refreshing solution to the emirate’s scorching summer heat by providing air-conditioned running and walking tracks inside malls.
Speaking about the initiative, Sheikh Hamdan said, “It is inspiring to see the commitment of so many of our citizens, residents and visitors to their health and wellbeing.”
Nine prominent retail locations are participating, including the world-renowned Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Hills Mall, City Centre Mirdif, City Centre Deira, Dubai Marina Mall, Festival Plaza, Dubai Festival City, and The Springs Souk. Together, these venues feature more than 10 kilometres of specially marked indoor tracks, creating an extensive network of climate-controlled fitness spaces.
The response has been remarkable, with community members joining spirited morning runs and demonstrating the initiative’s appeal across all age groups. Participants describe the experience as both refreshing and uplifting, with many families taking advantage of the free registration and amenities. Features include fitness-tracking systems, health awareness stations, guided stretching sessions, and children’s activity areas, while restaurants and retailers offer special deals to support healthy lifestyles. Weekend events, such as sports challenges and prize giveaways including iPhones and shopping vouchers, have further boosted engagement.
Forming a cornerstone of Dubai’s Social Agenda 33 and Quality of Life Strategy 33, the Mallathon underlines the emirate’s commitment to promoting health, wellbeing, and community engagement through accessible, free activities.
Dubai is finding new ways to keep people healthy, and the Mallathon shows how the city can use its spaces to support community fitness. For anyone wanting to stay active during the summer, these cool, indoor tracks offer an easy, comfortable, and social way to exercise. The Dubai Mallathon runs every day through August, and registration is free for everyone.
