The Election Commission of India has notified the schedule for the Vice-Presidential Election, 2025, through a Gazette of India Extraordinary published today. If required, polling will be held on September 9, 2025.

As per the official notification, the last date for filing nominations is August 21, 2025. The scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on August 22, while August 25 has been set as the final date for the withdrawal of candidatures. If the election is contested, voting will take place on September 9 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the designated polling stations.

Earlier, through separate notifications issued on July 25, the Commission appointed P.C. Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer for the election. Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, and Vijay Kumar, Director at the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, have been named as Assistant Returning Officers.

In accordance with Rule 3 of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974, the Returning Officer issued a public notice on August 7, detailing the nomination process. Candidates or their proposers or seconders can submit nomination papers at Room No. RS-28, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on working days, excluding public holidays, no later than August 21. In the Returning Officer’s absence, the nomination papers can be submitted to the Assistant Returning Officers at the same location.

Each nomination must include a certified copy of the electoral roll entry showing that the candidate is registered as an elector in any parliamentary constituency. A deposit of ₹15,000 is also required, either in cash at the time of submission or via earlier deposit in the Reserve Bank of India or a Government Treasury, with a valid receipt enclosed.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted at Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, First Floor, Parliament House, at 11 a.m. on August 22. Withdrawals must be submitted by 3 p.m. on August 25 by the candidate or an authorised proposer or seconder.

To ensure transparency, the Commission has arranged for simultaneous publication of the notification and public notice in the official gazettes of all States and Union Territories.

For election-related queries, P.C. Mody, the Returning Officer and Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, will be available for consultation at Room No. RS-08, Ground Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on all working days, including Saturdays (excluding public holidays), from August 9 to August 16.
