Authorities have set up flood relief camps in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar after the Yamuna river crossed the danger mark on Wednesday evening, following days of heavy rainfall in the national capital.
“These tents have been set up for shelter. People living in houses near the river will move here once the water enters their homes,” said Ashok, a resident of Mayur Vihar, speaking to ANI about the preparations.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), active monsoon conditions are likely to persist over Delhi in the coming days. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain for the city until August 31.
On Wednesday at 9 p.m., the Yamuna’s water level was recorded at 205.39 metres – above the danger mark of 205.33 metres. The warning level for the river is 204.50 metres, while evacuation procedures are initiated once levels reach 206 metres.
The rising water level has prompted precautionary measures, including the setting up of temporary shelters to accommodate residents from low-lying areas.
