Heavy rainfall forecast across central and southern India; Delhi to see cloudy skies till August 21

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that extremely heavy rainfall is likely across several parts of the country, particularly in central and southern India, in the coming days under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is likely on Monday in coastal Andhra Pradesh, southern Chhattisgarh, southern Odisha, Telangana, and south interior Karnataka. The Konkan region, including Mumbai, Goa, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and coastal Karnataka, may see intense spells on both Monday and Tuesday. Gujarat, meanwhile, is expected to receive very heavy rainfall a little later, between August 19 and 20.

The IMD said the monsoon will remain active over the southern peninsula and adjoining central India during the next three to four days. Extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is also forecast for Konkan, Goa, central Maharashtra, coastal Karnataka, Gujarat, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, southern Odisha, southern Chhattisgarh, and parts of interior Karnataka during this period.

In the past 24 hours, Konkan, coastal Karnataka, and Telangana recorded extremely heavy falls (exceeding 21 cm) at isolated locations. Very heavy rainfall (between 12 cm and 20 cm) was witnessed in Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Marathwada, central Maharashtra, south interior Karnataka, and Odisha. Several other states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, and western Madhya Pradesh, also reported heavy rainfall.

In Delhi-NCR, the weather is expected to remain cloudy between August 18 and 21, with light rain or thundershowers on some days. Maximum temperatures will range between 32°C and 36°C, remaining near or slightly below normal, while minimum temperatures will hover between 23°C and 25°C, dipping 2°C to 4°C below normal. Winds are expected predominantly from the southeast and east, with speeds varying between 5 and 20 kmph over the period.
