Heavy rainfall likely in Telangana, coastal Karnataka, and Konkan-Goa: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued fresh alerts for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over several parts of the country till August 30, with the most intense spells expected in Telangana, coastal Karnataka, and Konkan-Goa.

According to IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Telangana, Konkan and Goa, central Maharashtra, Kerala, and Karnataka on Thursday. Coastal Karnataka and Telangana are set to witness extremely heavy rainfall on August 28. The rain belt will later extend to Uttarakhand, where isolated very heavy rainfall is expected on August 28–29 and again on September 1–2. Eastern Rajasthan is also likely to receive heavy showers on August 31.

During the past 24 hours, exceptionally heavy rainfall (41 cm) was recorded in Kamareddy, Telangana. Goa also experienced extremely heavy downpours (exceeding 21 cm). Very heavy rainfall was reported in parts of coastal Karnataka, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, south Konkan, the ghat areas of central Maharashtra, and Marathawada. Heavy rain was also recorded in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, eastern Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Gujarat region, interior Karnataka, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Nagaland.

Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR is likely to remain cloudy through the end of August, with intermittent light rain and thundershowers. On August 28, Delhi is expected to see one or two spells of light rainfall during the afternoon or evening, with maximum temperatures ranging between 33–35°C, near normal for the season.

On August 29, light rain will continue, with temperatures slightly dipping to a maximum of 31–33°C and a minimum of 23–25°C, both below normal by 1–2°C. Similar conditions will prevail on August 30, with maximum temperatures between 31–33°C and minimums of 22–24°C, up to 4°C below normal. By August 31, Delhi’s maximum is forecast to hover between 30–32°C, while the minimum will remain at 22–24°C, both below normal by 2–4°C.

Winds across the four days are expected to predominantly blow from the southeast direction, varying between 10–22 kmph during the day and easing at night.

The IMD has cautioned residents in Telangana, Karnataka, Goa, Uttarakhand, and parts of central and eastern India to remain alert, as the spell of heavy rains is likely to trigger localised flooding, waterlogging, and disruption of daily life in low-lying areas.
