Heavy rainfall to persist in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Northeast; Delhi to see light showers till Aug 9

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in the next 24 hours, with intensity likely to reduce thereafter. In contrast, subdued rainfall activity is expected over central India and Rajasthan for the next six to seven days.

The Northeast and adjoining eastern India will continue to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next week, with extremely heavy showers (21 cm or more) likely in isolated areas of Arunachal Pradesh on August 8.

IMD has also issued alerts for very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, north interior Karnataka, and coastal Karnataka on August 6 and 7. Very heavy showers are expected in Arunachal Pradesh from August 7 to 11, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on August 7 and 8, and in Bihar and Jharkhand on August 7. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh during August 6 to August 12.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim may see heavy rainfall on August 7 and 11, while eastern Uttar Pradesh could experience it on August 12.

In the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm or more) was recorded in isolated places in Uttarakhand and coastal Karnataka. Heavy to very heavy rain also lashed parts of western Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and north interior Karnataka, while heavy showers were reported from Jammu & Kashmir, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Kerala, and parts of the Northeast.

For the national capital region, the IMD forecast indicates partly cloudy skies with the possibility of very light rain or drizzle on Wednesday and Thursday, and light rain or thundershowers on August 8 and 9.

Maximum temperatures are likely to range between 32°C and 36°C during this period, while minimum temperatures will stay around 24°C to 26°C.

On August 7, the maximum temperature may rise slightly above normal by 1–2°C, while by August 9, both day and night temperatures are expected to remain below normal.

Winds will predominantly blow from the southwest at speeds of 10–20 kmph, with slight variations during the day.
