ICMR’s SHINE initiative

ICMR’s SHINE initiative engages over 13,000 students nationwide in health and science outreach

In an effort to spark scientific curiosity and inspire the next generation of health researchers, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Health Research (DHR) organised a nationwide open day under the S.H.I.N.E. (Science, Health and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers) initiative on August 7 and 8. The programme was held across ICMR institutes and DHR’s Model Rural Health Research Units (MRHRUs) in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for students to “spend one day as a scientist.”

The event saw the participation of 13,150 students from grades 9 to 12, representing more than 300 schools across 39 districts in 16 states and union territories. Students were introduced to the world of health and biomedical research through guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, video presentations, and live demonstrations of ongoing scientific projects.

ICMR Director General and DHR Secretary Dr. Rajiv Bahl described the initiative as “a unique opportunity to ignite curiosity, foster innovation and inspire the next generation of health researchers.” Addressing the students, he encouraged them to “observe, question, and experience firsthand the spirit of scientific inquiry” and engage with scientists to understand their work in advancing medical research and public health.

The day’s activities also included interactions with ICMR scientists, allowing students to learn about their career journeys and research areas. A mascot, Dr. Curio, was introduced as a friendly guide for the young participants. Students also viewed four short films on ICMR’s flagship initiatives, including the development of Covaxin, the iDRONE project for healthcare delivery, India’s TB elimination mission, and the Vishanu Yudh Abhyas pandemic preparedness drill.

The event coincided with the 104th birth anniversary of renowned medical scientist Dr. Vulimiri Ramalingaswami, a former Director General of ICMR, whose contributions continue to inspire the scientific community.

ICMR said the SHINE initiative reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing young scientific minds and raising awareness about the critical role of research in strengthening public health.
