IMD forecast heavy rainfall in Northeast, eastern India, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a prolonged spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Northeast and adjoining eastern India over the next seven days, with extremely heavy showers (more than 21 cm) likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh on August 8. Several northeastern states including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are expected to receive intense rainfall on Thursday and Friday, with Assam and Meghalaya also likely to see another round of heavy precipitation on August 12 and 13.

The IMD has also indicated that the hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to witness scattered heavy showers between August 7 and 13, with rainfall intensity expected to increase in the later days. A fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to begin over both states, as well as parts of Uttar Pradesh, from August 10. Isolated instances of heavy rainfall are anticipated in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on August 7 and 11, as well as in Bihar and Tamil Nadu on August 8. At the same time, subdued rainfall activity is expected over central India and Rajasthan for the next four to five days.

The situation remains critical in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, where continuous heavy rain poses the risk of flooding and landslides. The IMD has also warned of extremely heavy rainfall again on August 8 in the state, which has been experiencing persistent wet conditions.

During the past 24 hours, Tripura recorded extremely heavy rainfall (over 21 cm) at isolated locations. Heavy to very heavy rainfall (ranging from 7 to 20 cm) was observed in parts of Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Himachal Pradesh, while heavy showers (7 to 11 cm) were recorded across various regions, including eastern Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Jharkhand, Telangana, and the sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

In Delhi-NCR, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy over the next few days with light rainfall or thundershowers likely in the evening or night.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature is expected to hover between 36 to 38°C, which is 2 to 4 degrees above normal, while wind speeds may reach 10–15 kmph from the southwest during the day and west at night.

For August 8, light rainfall is likely to continue, with temperatures remaining in the same range. However, the minimum temperature may drop to 24–26°C, staying 1 to 3 degrees below normal. Wind patterns will shift to the northwest during the day and south during the night, with reduced speeds of 5–10 kmph.

A dip in temperature is expected on August 9, with the mercury likely to settle between 32 to 34°C during the day and 24 to 26°C at night. Both maximum and minimum temperatures will remain slightly below normal.

On August 10, a similar pattern will persist with partly cloudy skies and light showers, while temperatures may rise marginally to 33 to 35°C during the day. Winds will blow from the northeast, gaining strength in the later part of the day.
