IMD forecast heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, Telangana, Himachal and Northeast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast widespread heavy rainfall activity across several regions of the country over the next week, with extremely heavy showers expected at isolated places in Uttarakhand, parts of the Northeast, and Telangana.

According to the IMD, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh during the next seven days. Uttarakhand could experience extremely heavy rain (21 cm or more) on Monday and Wednesday. Rainfall activity is also set to increase over east-central and adjoining north peninsular India, with Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana likely to witness a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy showers between August 13 and 17. Telangana, in particular, is expected to record extremely heavy rainfall on August 14 and 15.

The northeastern states will also see intense monsoon activity, with sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim expected to experience extremely heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday. Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya may witness extremely heavy showers on August 12, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya between August 11 and 14.

In the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Uttarakhand and sub-Himalayan West Bengal. Heavy to very heavy showers occurred in western Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Assam and Meghalaya, and Rayalaseema, while heavy rain was reported from parts of Jammu & Kashmir, eastern Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, central Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karaikal, and north interior Karnataka.

For Delhi-NCR, the weather over August 11–14 is expected to be a mix of partly cloudy to generally cloudy skies, with occasional light to moderate rain or thundershowers. Maximum temperatures will range from 31°C to 36°C, with minimums dipping to between 22°C and 26°C – in some cases up to 5°C below normal. Winds will vary in direction through the day, generally maintaining speeds between 10–15 kmph.
