IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in Jammu, Bengal, Assam and Sikkim; Delhi to see light showers

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of the country over the coming week, with extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu, Assam, West Bengal, and Sikkim on Tuesday.

In the north, Uttarakhand is expected to receive isolated extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm or more) on August 13, along with heavy to very heavy showers in some areas over the next seven days. Himachal Pradesh will also see heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations, while Jammu is likely to receive intense showers between August 12 and 15.

Eastern and northeastern states are also bracing for intense weather. Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast for Assam, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim on Tuesday. These regions, along with Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, are expected to witness heavy to very heavy rain until August 14.

A significant increase in rainfall activity is also expected over east-central and adjoining north-peninsular India. Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Telangana will see a fresh spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall from August 13 to 17, with Telangana likely to face extremely heavy rain on August 13 and 14. The Konkan, Goa, and ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra are forecast to receive intense showers between August 15 and 18.

The IMD reported that in the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Jammu, while heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred in parts of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Telangana. Several other regions, including Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh, also recorded heavy rainfall.

For Delhi-NCR, the IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with occasional light rain or thundershowers until August 15. On August 12, light showers may occur at night, with maximum temperatures ranging between 31°C and 33°C. On August 13, similar weather is expected in the evening or night, with temperatures between 33°C and 35°C during the day and 23°C to 25°C at night.

The capital is likely to see light to moderate rain on the morning of August 14, with maximum temperatures around 31°C to 33°C. Independence Day celebrations on August 15 could take place under cloudy skies, with light rain likely in the morning. Temperatures will range from 31°C to 33°C during the day and 22°C to 24°C at night, with cooler-than-normal conditions.
