IMD predicts heavy rainfall across northeast, eastern India; Delhi to see light showers

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across northeast and adjoining eastern India over the next seven days, with extremely heavy showers expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Meghalaya on Sunday. Kerala and Tamil Nadu are also likely to witness heavy rainfall over the next five days, with isolated extremely heavy showers on August 5.

In contrast, subdued rainfall activity is expected over central and northern parts of Peninsular India during the next four to five days.

According to IMD, extremely heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim on Sunday, and in Kerala and Tamil Nadu on August 5.

Very heavy showers are expected in Arunachal Pradesh on August 3-4, and during August 6–9; Assam and Meghalaya on August 4 and during August 7–9; eastern Madhya Pradesh on August 3; and Uttarakhand between August 3 and 5.

Similar conditions are predicted for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on August 4, Himachal Pradesh on August 4 and 5, and several other regions including Haryana, Rayalaseema, Bihar, Kerala, and Karnataka during this period.

In the last 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall (exceeding 21 cm) was recorded at isolated places in Assam and Meghalaya. Heavy to very heavy rainfall was also observed in parts of Uttarakhand, eastern Uttar Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, while Himachal Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Karnataka recorded heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the national capital is expected to experience cloudy skies and light to moderate rain over the next four days.

On Sunday, Delhi will remain partly cloudy with a possibility of thundershowers in the evening or night. Maximum temperatures are likely to hover between 32°C and 34°C, which is 1–2°C above normal.

On August 4, the city will see a generally cloudy sky with light rain during the early hours and thundershowers in the evening. Temperatures are expected to range between 23°C and 33°C, with both maximum and minimum temperatures falling 1–3°C below normal.

Light to moderate rainfall is forecast for August 5, while August 6 will see partly cloudy skies with light showers.

Wind speeds in the capital will vary between 8–20 kmph during this period, predominantly from southwest and southeast directions on most days.
