The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu will receive heavy rain on Thursday, followed by a gradual reduction in intensity.
A low-pressure area over northwest and adjoining parts of the west – central Bay of Bengal and southern Odisha – northern Andhra Pradesh coasts is triggering heavy to very heavy rainfall across large parts of the country.
Intense showers are expected to continue over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Rayalaseema over the next four to five days.
Extremely heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places over Konkan and Goa on August 17, and over central Maharashtra on August 17 and 18. Very heavy rain is also likely in multiple regions, including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, coastal and interior Karnataka, Uttarakhand, eastern Rajasthan, Assam and Meghalaya, and parts of Gujarat between August 14 and 20.
In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on August 14, extremely heavy rainfall (over 21 cm) was recorded in isolated areas of Uttarakhand, Bihar, Konkan and Goa, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Very heavy showers (12–20 cm) occurred in parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Konkan and Goa, and Telangana, while heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) was reported from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, central Maharashtra and north interior Karnataka.
For Delhi-NCR, the IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies from August 14 to 17, accompanied by intermittent rain.
On Thursday, light to moderate showers with heavy spells at isolated spots are likely, with maximum temperatures expected between 29°C and 31°C – 3°C to 5°C below normal.
On Independence Day, the city may see one or two spells of light rain or thunderstorms in the morning and evening, with temperatures ranging from 23°C to 25°C at night and 31°C to 33°C during the day.
On August 16, similar weather conditions are expected, with cloudy skies and scattered light rain, and temperatures between 22°C and 24°C at night and 32°C to 34°C during the day.
By August 17, only very light rain or drizzle is expected in the morning.
Throughout the period between August 14-17, winds will generally blow from the east or southeast at speeds of 10–15 kmph, keeping the overall weather relatively cool for the season.
