India-Philippines ties: A relationship anchored in shared values, diaspora and cultural bonds

India and the Philippines share a rich and evolving relationship that goes beyond diplomacy, grounded in centuries-old cultural ties and people-to-people connections. From shared civilizational roots and educational collaborations to vibrant diaspora contributions and mutual support in times of need, the partnership reflects a broad-based and enduring engagement. As both countries navigate contemporary global challenges, these foundational bonds continue to deepen and diversify.

Vibrant Indian diaspora

The Indian community in the Philippines, estimated at around 70,000 individuals, plays a key role in strengthening people-to-people ties. Concentrated mainly in Metro Manila, Davao, and Cebu, the diaspora includes long-established Sindhi and Punjabi families. In addition to this, approximately 800 Indian professionals are employed in multinational corporations, Indian joint ventures, and institutions such as the Asian Development Bank.

The cultural presence of the Indian community is also reflected in the existence of 31 Gurudwaras, 8 Hindu temples, and organizations such as the Indian Cultural Association of the Philippines and the Indian Ladies Club. Spiritual groups like the Art of Living, Sri Sathya Sai Organization, and Brahma Kumaris also have active followings in the country.

Educational links

Education remains another pillar of the bilateral relationship. Over 8,800 Indian students are currently pursuing higher studies in Philippine institutions, especially in the field of medicine. Other fields include information technology, management, theology, and aviation.

Historical bonds

The cultural ties between India and the Philippines are both historic and contemporary. The two countries renewed their Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP) for 2019–2023 during President Murmu’s visit to the Philippines in October 2019. Since then, Indian cultural events have been held regularly to mark national days, festivals, and occasions such as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, Constitution Day, and Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas.

In 2024, the Indian Mission in the Philippines released a compendium of yoga resources on the occasion of International Day of Yoga. It also launched a guide to Indian restaurants in the country, including trivia about Indian cuisine and its influence on Filipino food.

India and the Philippines also share deep-rooted civilizational links. Many words in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines, are derived from Sanskrit. Historical artifacts such as the Laguna Copperplate Inscription, written in Kavi script of Indian origin, and the Agusan Tara gold statue, further highlight ancient cultural exchanges. The Filipino version of the Indian epic Ramayana, known as Maharadia Lawana, is another example of shared cultural heritage.

The India–Philippines relationship stands as a testament to the strength of shared values, cultural affinity, and mutual respect. With sustained people-to-people contact, expanding educational and cultural exchanges, the bilateral partnership is well-positioned to grow further in the years ahead—anchored firmly in trust, collaboration, and a shared vision for regional peace and prosperity.
