The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday reaffirmed the strength of the India–United States strategic partnership, stating that the relationship is rooted in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties. The MEA noted that this comprehensive partnership has withstood various transitions and challenges over the years and continues to move forward with a substantive agenda.
Addressing a media briefing, the MEA spokesperson also responded to questions on several international developments and bilateral matters.
On India’s Energy Sourcing
The spokesperson said that decisions related to energy sourcing are guided by availability in global markets and prevailing international circumstances. He emphasised that such decisions are taken in the best interest of the country.
On the Nimisha Priya Case
The MEA reiterated that the case of Nimisha Priya remains a sensitive and complex matter. The Government of India has been extending all possible assistance in the case. The government continues to monitor the developments closely and is also in touch with friendly nations regarding the matter.
The spokesperson clarified that certain media reports claiming the revocation of the death sentence or a final agreement for her release are inaccurate. He urged the media and public to refrain from spreading misinformation or speculation, given the sensitive nature of the case.
On India–US Relations
Reaffirming India’s close ties with the United States, the MEA described the relationship as a comprehensive global strategic partnership. Anchored in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and strong people-to-people ties, the partnership has continued to evolve, with both nations committed to advancing a broad-based agenda.
On India–US Defence Cooperation
Highlighting the growing defence engagement, the spokesperson said that India and the US enjoy a strong defence partnership, which has deepened in recent years. There is further potential under the India–US COMPACT for the 21st Century.
He also reiterated that India’s bilateral ties with any country are based on their individual merit and are not influenced by third-party perspectives.
On India–Russia Relations
Speaking on India–Russia ties, the MEA termed the partnership as steady and time-tested. The spokesperson stated that this relationship continues to serve the mutual interests of both nations.
On Defence Procurements
Responding to queries on defence acquisitions, the MEA clarified that all procurement decisions are taken based on national security imperatives and strategic assessments, keeping in mind India’s sovereign interests.
