India’s 100 GW Solar PV milestone marks triumph of Atmanirbhar Bharat, clean energy push: PM Modi

India has achieved a historic milestone of 100 GW in solar PV module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), a remarkable leap from just 2.3 GW in 2014. This achievement underscores the country’s rapid progress in building a self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and the global push for clean energy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the milestone, emphasizing its significance in bolstering India’s self-reliance and clean energy efforts. Responding to a post by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on X, the Prime Minister said, “This is yet another milestone towards self-reliance! It depicts the success of India’s manufacturing capabilities and our efforts towards popularising clean energy.”

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi attributed the achievement to Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership and transformative initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules. He emphasized that this growth strengthens India’s path toward achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to global decarbonization efforts.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) introduced the ALMM Order on January 2, 2019, with the first list published on March 10, 2021, enlisting 8.2 GW of capacity. In just over four years, this capacity has surged more than twelvefold to 100 GW, driven by 100 manufacturers operating 123 manufacturing units, up from 21 in 2021. This growth reflects contributions from both established companies and new entrants, many adopting high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations, creating a competitive landscape capable of meeting domestic and global demands.

The government’s commitment to self-reliance in solar PV manufacturing has been bolstered by initiatives like the PLI Scheme and measures to ensure a level playing field for Indian manufacturers.
