India’s mobile exports

India’s mobile exports grow 127%, electronics output jumps sixfold since 2014

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has seen a sixfold rise in production and an eightfold surge in exports over the past 11 years, according to government data presented in Parliament on Wednesday.

The production of electronic goods rose from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014–15 to ₹11.3 lakh crore in 2024–25. Exports grew from ₹38,000 crore to ₹3.27 lakh crore during the same period.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said that India now has 300 mobile manufacturing units, up from just two in 2014–15. Mobile phone production has jumped 28 times — from ₹18,000 crore to ₹5.45 lakh crore — over the last 11 years.

Mobile phone exports, the minister said, grew by 127 per cent, from ₹1,500 crore in 2014–15 to ₹2 lakh crore in 2024–25.

Industry estimates cited by the government indicate that value addition in the sector has improved substantially over the years. This growth has been driven by policy reforms and incentives rolled out in the past decade.

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics and IT hardware has drawn cumulative investments of ₹13,107 crore, resulting in production worth ₹8,56,947 crore and the creation of over 1.35 lakh direct jobs as of June 2025, the minister informed. Exports under the scheme have reached ₹4,65,809 crore.

The government estimates that every direct job in the sector generates three additional indirect jobs.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in electronics manufacturing since FY21 stands at over $4 billion, with nearly 70 per cent of the inflow attributed to beneficiaries of the PLI scheme.

Under the Semicon India programme, six projects have been approved to develop the semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem, involving investments of over ₹1.55 lakh crore. These projects, in various stages of implementation, are expected to generate more than 27,000 direct jobs.

In addition, the government has launched the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) with a budgetary outlay of ₹22,919 crore to deepen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
