INS Tamal bolsters India-Italy defence ties with port call at Naples

The Indian Navy’s latest stealth frigate, INS Tamal, concluded a significant port call at Naples, Italy, from August 13-16, during its return journey to India, reinforcing the strategic partnership between India and Italy, formally elevated in 2023. The visit highlighted growing defence cooperation and maritime collaboration between the two nations.

Prior to arriving at Naples, INS Tamal conducted a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with ITS Trieste, the Italian Navy’s newly commissioned Landing Helicopter Dock. The exercise featured communication drills, tactical manoeuvres, flying operations, and an exchange of sea riders, culminating in a ceremonial steam past.

During the port call, INS Tamal engaged in activities aimed at strengthening bilateral defence ties. The Commanding Officer met Vice Admiral Pierpaolo Budri, Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy’s Logistics Command, and Ms Laura Lieto, Deputy Mayor of Naples, to discuss initiatives under the India-Italy Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. Professional exchanges and bilateral discussions with senior military and local officials further deepened cooperation.

A cultural programme was hosted onboard INS Tamal in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Rome, attended by representatives from the Italian Navy, local government, diplomatic corps, UN agencies in Italy, and defence industry leaders. India’s Ambassador to Italy, H.E. Mrs Vani Rao, interacted with the ship’s crew and Italian Navy officers during the event.

On August 15, the ship marked India’s 79th Independence Day with a ceremonial parade onboard, and the crew participated in celebrations at the Embassy of India in Rome. The visit underscores India’s commitment to enhancing ties with Italy and fostering maritime diplomacy. Following its departure from Naples on August 16, INS Tamal will make additional port calls in Europe and Asia en route to its home base in India, further strengthening bilateral relations.
