Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train

Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project progressing; ₹78,839 crore spent so far: govt

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is making steady progress with major civil works, station foundations, river bridges and tunneling activities underway, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The 508-km project, being implemented with technical and financial assistance from Japan, spans Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Land acquisition of 1,389.5 hectares and all statutory clearances have been completed, while 24 of the 28 tender packages have been awarded.

According to official data, civil works are advancing rapidly. Foundation work has been completed for 406 km, piers for 395 km, and girder launching for 312 km. Track laying has begun on 127 km of viaducts, while Overhead Equipment mast erection is in progress.

Of the 12 planned stations, foundation works have been finished at eight stations in Gujarat, while work at three stations in Maharashtra and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) hub is ongoing. Sixteen river bridges have been completed and work is advancing on nine others. The Gujarat tunnel is complete, and work on the 21-km undersea tunnel has begun, with 4 km of tunneling already completed in Maharashtra.

The cumulative financial expenditure on the project has reached ₹78,839 crore till June 30, 2025. Vaishnaw said the project has generated direct and indirect employment through construction, supply chains, and allied services.

However, he noted that given the project’s complexity, exact timelines and cost estimates for completion can only be determined after the finalisation of associated works such as track, electrical, signaling and trainset supply.

On Vande Bharat services, the minister said 150 semi-high-speed trains are currently operational across the Indian Railways network. Designed and manufactured indigenously at the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, the Vande Bharat trainsets are part of the government’s Make in India initiative.

Additionally, work is underway on 200 Vande Bharat sleeper rakes to expand services to more routes, he added.
