Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced the formation of a three-member panel to investigate allegations against Allahabad High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma, days after the Supreme Court upheld the in-house inquiry process against him.
The panel comprises Justice Amit Kumar, Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava and B.B. Acharya. Birla accepted a motion signed by 146 MPs seeking Varma’s impeachment.
On August 7, the Supreme Court dismissed Varma’s plea challenging the in-house inquiry panel’s findings and former CJI Sanjiv Khanna’s recommendation for impeachment. The panel had been set up after burnt, unaccounted currency was found at Varma’s Delhi residence following a fire in March 2025, when he was a judge of the Delhi High Court.
A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih rejected Varma’s argument that he was denied a fair hearing.
The court also questioned why he had not challenged the inquiry procedure prior to appearing before the panel.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal represented Justice Varma.
