Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday welcomed the passage of The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 in Parliament, calling it a step that will give a push to India’s e-sports ecosystem while also shielding society from the risks of money-based online games.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “This Bill, passed by both Houses of Parliament, highlights our commitment towards making India a hub for gaming, innovation and creativity. It will encourage e-sports and online social games. At the same time, it will save our society from the harmful effects of online money games.”
The legislation, cleared by both Houses this week, seeks to promote safe and competitive gaming platforms while tightening regulation around gambling-related practices. The government has pitched it as a balancing act—encouraging innovation and investment in gaming while addressing concerns over addiction and financial harm.
PM Modi’s remarks came in response to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s post on the Bill’s passage. The Minister had earlier said the framework will ensure the industry grows responsibly, with safeguards for young players and families.
